Carbon Fiber Composition in High Performance Automobiles
Carbon fiber is an extremely strong thin fiber made by thermally pyrolyzing synthetic fibers, such as rayon, until charred. These long fibers are woven together in a fashion similar to weaving cloth material. For most automotive composite applications, such as doors, hood, trunk lids, fender panels etc, carbon fiber woven material is aligned into a pre-form which is placed in a mold. The woven material is injected with an epoxy resin and is then heated to activate and cure the resin. Carbon fiber composites are used extensively in high-end high-performance automobiles as it provides a significant weight reduction because of its unsurpassed strength-to-weight ratio.
